1. Will all students who are evaluated in the Low Vision Clinic, and who need a monocular or magnifier be given the suggested models on the day of the evaluation?
We normally have all devices on hand, so the student leaves with the devices the optometrist prescribes. The monoculars and magnifiers are given to the student and TVI, and do not need to be returned to the Smokey Powell Center. If the student ever transfers to another school or system, the device goes with the student.
2. Are TVIs and parents allowed to be with the student during the evaluation?
Parents and TVIs are encouraged to sit in on the evaluations. Regardless, the optometrist always meets with the parents and other school personnel after each exam.
3. Do you break for lunch?
Yes. We usually break between 12:00-1:00. Student lunches are free. Adults and other family members can eat for $3.00 each. We need to know in advance how many visitors to expect for lunch.
4. Are tours of the Georgia Academy for the Blind available when we are there for evaluations?
Yes. We are happy to provide tours of the school, with prior notice.
5. What devices are available for loan through the center?
Devices for loan include braille notetakers, video magnifiers, embossers, mountbattens, victor readers, all sorts of vision devices--based on availability.
6. How is equipment requested for loan?
Currently, the student must have an Assistive Technology evaluation at the SP Center in order for the equipment to be loaned. There are exceptions, however, based on individual needs.
7. How long can the school system use loaned devices to see how they work for the student?
Our loans usually run until the end of the school year.
