School Profile

In 1965, Academy administrators presented to the State Board of Education proposals for implementing integration of the white and Negro division of the school. As neither of the existing structures was adequate for combined student bodies, the plan for construction expansion of gradual integration of instruction and housing on the Vineville campus was adopted. Classroom and living space left available at the Shurling site by consolidation of the two schools was utilized to launch a program for training multidisabled children. This project was federally funded and provided special education to selected youngsters whose severity of disabilities precluded their inclusion in the regular program of study. Both school units operated under the Georgia Department of Education, Division of State Schools and under the immediate supervision of the Academy Superintendent.

In 1981, all programs of the Academy were consolidated to the Vineville campus. This was made possible by the opening of the Roy A. Hendricks Classroom Building and the renovation of other facilities so that both visually impaired and multidisabled children could be provided space for integrated as well as separate functions. The Vineville campus now meets the mandates of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and is accessible throughout to all students and employees.
